The closest possible pick to the gold standard tortoiseshell. Due to casein’s similar molecular structure to TS, it behaves almost identically to tortoiseshell in the way it wears, flexes and grips, making it one of the best options for a pick in 2026. It is made by hardening the casein protein in milk in formaldehyde. This means it is incredibly easy to make different colours and patterns out of.
At Carson Picks we use mostly old casein salvaged from antique cigarette cases, boxes, poker chips and combs. We use a high polish finish as standard, as we believe it brings out the properties of casein best, but matte is available on request.
Casein has that organic feel that slowly becomes the most natural pick you could ever play with. A lot of players describe picking up a well used casein pick as feeling “right”
If you haven’t tried it, we strongly recommend you do.
Disclaimer: Stocks may vary due to the limited nature of old casein sheet and antiques. Reach out if you have any questions.
